My Story

Hi, I'm Susy Chapman. I thought I'd tell you a little about myself and how I came to teach English to speakers of other languages.

How did I become an English teacher?

My journey really began when I travelled overseas at the age of 20. Meeting people from different countries inspired me to become qualified to teach English, and it's something I've loved ever since.

What do I enjoy about teaching?

One of the things I enjoy most about teaching is working out the best way to explain something so it makes sense and feels easy to understand. When I teach people from different language and cultural backgrounds, I think carefully about their language, their culture, and the best way to explain English so it is clear and easy to understand.

What do students appreciate about my teaching?

I also believe that people learn best when they feel comfortable. That's why I like to introduce new words and sentence patterns step by step, with plenty of opportunities to practise through listening, speaking, reading and writing. Most importantly, I want my students to know that it's okay to make mistakes. Learning a language takes time, and mistakes are a normal part of the journey. When people feel safe to have a go, they become more confident, and really progress in their learning.

How did Equip English start?

In 2020, when schools closed during COVID, I started teaching online. I discovered that the same teaching methods I have always used successfully in the classroom work just as well online. Now I love being able to help students from different countries wherever they are in the world.
That's why I created Equip English and my beginner English course, to give beginners a clear, supportive place to start learning English, one step at a time.
